Your Smile Is Our Priority

What to Do in a Dental Emergency

  • Knocked-Out Tooth. Pick the tooth up by the crown (the white part), not the root. Rinse it gently with water if it's dirty but do not scrub or remove any tissue. If possible, place the tooth back in the socket and hold it in place with gentle pressure. If you can't reinsert it, keep it moist in a glass of milk or between your cheek and gum. Time matters. A knocked-out tooth has the best chance of being saved if reimplanted within 30 minutes.
  • Severe Toothache. Rinse with warm salt water and gently floss around the tooth to remove any trapped food. Take over-the-counter pain medication as directed. Do not place aspirin directly on the gums as this can cause tissue burns. A persistent or worsening toothache often indicates an infection that needs professional treatment.
  • Broken or Chipped Tooth. Save any pieces of the tooth if possible. Rinse your mouth with warm water and apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek to reduce swelling. If the break has a sharp edge, cover it with dental wax or sugar-free gum to protect your tongue and cheeks until you can see us.
  • Lost Filling or Crown. Keep the filling or crown if you can find it. For a lost crown, you can temporarily place it back over the tooth using over-the-counter dental cement or a small amount of denture adhesive. Avoid chewing on that side. Do not use superglue. Schedule an appointment as soon as possible to prevent further damage to the exposed tooth.

Common Emergencies We Treat

  • Severe Toothaches and Tooth Infections. Persistent pain, throbbing, swelling, or fever can indicate an infection inside the tooth or in the surrounding gum tissue. Our team diagnoses the source of pain and provides immediate relief, whether that means starting a root canal, prescribing antibiotics, or draining an abscess.
  • Broken, Cracked, and Chipped Teeth. Trauma from falls, sports injuries, or biting down on something hard can fracture a tooth. We evaluate the extent of the damage and restore the tooth with a filling, bonding, or crown depending on the severity.
  • Knocked-Out Teeth. A permanent tooth that has been completely knocked out can often be reimplanted if treated within 30 minutes to one hour. Our team acts quickly to give your tooth the best chance of survival.
  • Lost Fillings and Crowns. A missing filling or crown exposes the underlying tooth to bacteria and sensitivity. We replace or re-cement restorations promptly to protect the tooth from further decay or damage.
  • Dental Injuries in Children. Kids are especially prone to dental injuries from sports, playground accidents, and falls. Our team has extensive experience handling pediatric dental emergencies and knows how to keep young patients calm while providing fast, effective treatment.

We Work With The Following Insurances & Accept Most PPOs

Yes. Our Oxnard and Santa Paula offices try to reserve time in our schedule for emergency patients. Call any of our three locations directly and let us know it's an emergency. We make every effort to see you the same day, and most emergency patients are seen within a few hours of calling.

The cost of an emergency visit depends on the diagnosis and treatment required. An emergency exam with X-rays is the starting point, and additional costs depend on whether you need a filling, root canal, extraction, or other procedure. With dental insurance, emergency exams are typically covered as a diagnostic service. Our team provides a clear cost estimate before starting any treatment so you can make an informed decision.

Emergency rooms can manage pain and prescribe antibiotics, but they do not perform dental procedures like root canals, extractions, or crown repairs. In most cases, the ER will refer you to a dentist for definitive treatment anyway. Calling our office first is usually the fastest path to resolving the problem, and the cost is typically lower than an ER visit.
